Bone china meets blown glass at a High Tea

Forty five discerning guests enjoyed the delights of a High Tea at Café Zoo in Drysdale on Monday 7 January, while watching local glass artist Glenda MacNaughton blowing and sculpting glass.
Happy faces at one of the High Tea tables

The occasion was the launch of the 2019 Festival of Glass Treasure Hunt, which has over a hundred pieces of locally-made glass art as prizes and involves thirty three businesses in Curlewis, Drysdale, Clifton Springs and Portarlington.

Treasure Hunt organiser Diane Schofield said, “Everywhere I looked, people were tucking-in to the yummy food, watching Glenda blowing glass or talking about what she was doing. The ten door prizes of glass bookmarks and decorations were especially popular!”

This is the Festival’s third annual Treasure Hunt and the launch was booked out two weeks in advance. Café Zoo owner Marc Rodway said, “We were very pleased that the High Tea was so popular. It was a great way to start this year’s Festival of Glass Treasure Hunt.”

The Treasure Hunt is the first event on the 2019 Festival of Glass calendar, which also includes an Expo with 45 exhibitors, the annual Glass Art Awards and demonstrations and classes by renowned glass artists Davide Penso (from Murano, Italy) and Karina Guevin and Cédric Ginart (both from Montreal, Canada).

Treasure Hunt on High Tea menu

A High Tea at Café Zoo in Drysdale on Monday 7 January will launch the 2019 Festival of Glass Treasure Hunt.

High Tea guests can watch local glass artist Glenda MacNaughton blowing and sculpting glass and browse the “Birds of the Bellarine” glass art exhibition that runs until March.

The High Tea was booked out two weeks in advance and, not surprisingly, owner Marc Rodway is delighted. “It will be a great start to this year’s Festival of Glass and to its Treasure Hunt”, he said.

Thirty three businesses in Curlewis, Drysdale, Clifton Springs and Portarlington are involved in the Treasure Hunt, which has over a hundred prizes of locally-made glass art.

Treasure Hunt organiser Diane Schofield said, “New businesses join the Treasure Hunt each year, generally because they’ve heard good reports from other businesses who’ve been involved”.

2019 Festival biggest yet
The Treasure Hunt is the first event on the 2019 Festival of Glass calendar, which also includes an Expo with 45 exhibitors, the annual Glass Art Awards and demonstrations and classes by renowned glass artists Davide Penso (from Murano, Italy) and Karina Guevin and Cédric Ginart (both from Montreal, Canada).

“The Festival’s visiting artists have international reputations for excellence”, said Festival coordinator Doug Carson. “Their classes enable glass artists in Australia to develop their abilities without travelling overseas and their spectacular public demonstrations introduce audiences to the beauty and skill of glass art.”

Expanded Treasure Hunt just weeks away

What CAN this person be talking about? “I have my pirate’s three-corner hat, my coat with the parrot on the shoulder and my eye patch. What else do I need? Ah yes! My trusty spade!”

They’re preparing for the third annual Treasure Hunt, which will run between Monday 8th January and Saturday 17 February 2018 as part of the Festival of Glass.

The 2018 Treasure Hunt will be launched officially on Monday 8 January at Drysdale’s Bungalow restaurant. The launch will feature a High Tea and the opening of an exhibition of glass art, which will run at the Bungalow throughout the Treasure Hunt.

Diane Schofield’s Treasure Hunt team has signed up thirty two businesses from Curlewis, Drysdale, Clifton Springs and Portarlington as participants in the 2018 Treasure Hunt.

“This is the third Treasure Hunt and the number of participating businesses has increased each year”, said Diane Schofield. “Businesses have found it worthwhile – and enjoyable – to be involved in the Treasure Hunt and they’ve encouraged others to join in.”

Businesses in the Treasure Hunt will commission pieces of glass art from local artists and display them throughout the Treasure Hunt; and the thirty two pieces will be prizes in the Treasure Hunt draw at the Festival of Glass Expo on Sunday 18 February at Drysdale’s Christian College.

Each business will also display a glass “Tiny Treasure” by a local artist and when a treasure hunter finds a “Tiny Treasure”, the business will stamp their Treasure Hunt entry form. Every entry form stamped by ten businesses goes into the Treasure Hunt draw.

Business meets glass art at Treasure Hunt Preview
At an exclusive Preview on Wednesday 13 December 2017, business people on the Bellarine will meet local glass artists from whom they have commissioned pieces of glass art as prizes in the Treasure Hunt. The business people can learn how their glass art was created, while the artists can learn how their creativity is supporting the local economy.

2017's Treasure Hunt Preview
“Everyone’s a winner in our Treasure Hunt”, said Diane Schofield. “Businesses can increase their custom, glass artists can increase their public profile and, of course, Treasure Hunters can win beautiful glass art.”

Treasure Hunt boosts local businesses

Businesses involved in the 2017 Festival of Glass Treasure Hunt report that it is bringing them more visitors.

Scarlet and Lilly at Montana's, Portarlington
Twenty eight business in Curlewis, Drysdale and Portarlington have commissioned pieces of glass art from local artists as prizes for the Treasure Hunt, which is in its second year.

Treasure Hunters who spot each business's glass 'Tiny Treasure' get their entry form stamped. When they have collected ten stamps, they can enter the draw for the Treasure Hunt prizes, which will happen at the Festival of Glass Expo on Sunday 19 February at Drysdale's Christian College.

Treasure Hunt organiser Diane Schofield has been talking to the participating businesses. "Most of the businesses - whether this is their first or second year - are very happy with how the Treasure Hunt is going", she said. "Many more people are coming to see them than usual, especially during the school holidays, with lots more families becoming Treasure Hunters."

"This year's Treasure Hunters have been very enthusiastic", Schofield added. "Several of them have had their entry form stamped by all twenty eight businesses, rather than the ten they need to enter the draw. Still, it's good for the businesses!"

Featured Festival sponsor – Mannerim Stables A passion for flowers and horses

Victoria 3222   0413 945 021

The Festival of Glass committee is pleased to welcome back Mannerim Stables in its second year as a sponsor of the Festival’s Treasure Hunt and we thank them for their support.

The folk at Mannerim Stables have been farming flowers for over thirty years, supplying cut flowers to the Melbourne Wholesale Flower Market and wholesales bulbs nationally. For the last seventeen years, the family has also bred Quarter Horses and three years ago they built the Stables from recycled stone and wood to showcase their horses to prospective buyers.

In the last year, the farm has been open to the public, offering ‘field to vase’ and ‘paddock to plate’ experiences. On offer are fresh cut flowers, chemical-free vegetables, free range eggs, potted flowering bulbs and flowering bulbs for autumn & spring.

There are also pick-your-own-flowers days. The Stables provide cutting tools and a few baskets and then it’s over to you to pick your fill of flowers. Mannerim Stables is a working farm (portable toilets & unpaved tracks), so ensure that you wear sturdy, comfortable shoes.

Reviews of Mannerim Stables have been consistently positive and when you visit, pack a picnic, because there is a lovely grassed area just waiting for you to sit on and enjoy the rural atmosphere!

Mosaic marauder makes memorable mascot!

A mosaic pirate head has become the mascot of the 2017 Festival of Glass Treasure Hunt.
From marauder to mascot!

The head was created by Festival of Glass committee member Diane Schofield, who heads the team running the 2017 Treasure Hunt.

“People don’t always associate glass with mosaics”, said Diane. “Perhaps this is because the little tiles (‘tesserae’) used to create mosaics can be of stone or marble, as well as glass. However, I created my pirate head using glass tiles exclusively.”

The Treasure Hunt was launched on 3 January and has attracted twenty eight business sponsors in Curlewis, Drysdale and Portarlington.

Mosaics will be among the many forms of glass art on display at the Festival of Glass Expo on 19 February at Christian College, Drysdale.

More Bellarine businesses back Treasure Hunt

More businesses on the Bellarine Peninsula are backing the 2017 Festival of Glass Treasure Hunt, which runs between 2 January and 18 February.

Curlewis's Chemist For Less is ready!
Twenty eight businesses in Curlewis, Drysdale and Portarlington are backing the 2017 Treasure Hunt - eight more than last year.

Treasure hunters can spot each participating business by a poster in its window or by an interactive map; if they find a glass 'Tiny Treasure' on the premises, the business will stamp their Treasure Hunt entry form.

Portarlington's Wish Pond is set!
Each entry form with ten stamps on it goes into the Treasure Hunt draw at the Festival of Glass Expo on Sunday 19 February.

The draw has over a hundred pieces of locally made glass art as prizes, so treasure hunters, businesses and artists can all be winners!

Business benefits
Being in the Treasure Hunt is good for a business, because while treasure hunters search the premises for its 'Tiny Treasure', they see everything else that the business has to offer.

Participating businesses recognise that the Treasure Hunt attracts inquisitive treasure hunters who  may not otherwise come onto their premises; and they are responding by displaying Treasure Hunt promotional material prominently.

Portarlington's Montana's is keen!
Each participating business is featured on the Festival web site and the Festival blog, exposing them to potential customers who may not otherwise.

Several participating businesses have been featured in previous posts on this blog, all feature on the web site and, of course, all the businesses appear on the Treasure Hunt entry form.

Featured Festival sponsor – Blue Pen (i)
0429 911 980              blupen@ncable.net.au
Blue Pen is the business name of graphic designer Lyn Ingles, who has been a significant supporter of the Festival of Glass since it started in 2011. Lyn has been the major creator of the Festival’s ‘face’ – a consistent, coherent series of images that integrate the Festival’s increasingly diverse activities.

Lyn created a logo for the first Festival of Glass in 2011 and that logo has been associated with every subsequent Festival. The logo’s distinctive typeface and colours have underpinned other logos that Lyn has created subsequently to identify and integrate elements of the Festival. These include the Expo, the Glass Art Awards and the Workshops, as well as Festival projects such as The Glass Trail, the Glass Reflections web site of local glass history and The Glass Mural in Drysdale’s town square.

Most recently, Lyn’s original logo has inspired the striking graphics that she has created for the Festival’s Treasure Hunt, which started in 2016.

Lyn’s creativity and imagination are evident in her work for the Festival of Glass and those qualities are available to any private or public organisation wishing to create a brand or a public ‘face’ - or to improve its existing one.

Diane Schofield's Treasure Hunt team has signed up twenty eight businesses in Drysdale, Clifton Springs, Curlewis and Portarlington - up from twenty Drysdale businesses in last year's event.

Featured Festival sponsor - Bendigo Bank (ii)
The Festival of Glass committee is grateful to the Bendigo Bank, which has supported the Festival since it started in 2011 and is now a major sponsor.

The Bellarine Peninsula is still a predominantly rural area (despite a growing patchwork of housing estates) and two ‘arms’ of the Bendigo Bank - Rural Finance and Rural Bank - are geared specifically to rural businesses.

Rural Finance has been a specialist lender to Victorian agribusinesses since 1945. In 2014, it became part of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank and is now aligned with the Rural Bank (see below). Rural Finance’s Relationship Managers visit each prospective customer’s farm to ensure that they understand their circumstances, then design loan packages to suit that customer’s individual needs.

Rural Bank provides a specialised banking service to individuals and businesses in rural areas, but its customers can also access the products and services offered by the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank.

Featured Festival sponsor – Drysdale & Clifton Springs Community Association Inc. (i) Improving local people’s wellbeing
P.O. Box 581, Drysdale Vic 3222      E-mail: dryclift@bigpond.com
Members of the Drysdale & Clifton Springs Community Association (DCSCA) live, work or study in Drysdale, Clifton Springs or in the surrounding area; and they aim to improve local people’s well-being and to improve the natural, social and built environments. DCSCA members meet regularly to discuss how the local community is changing; to work with other local groups and organisations to shape the area’s future; and to represent local people's ideas and opinions to outside organisations.

In 2011, DCSCA initiated the Festival of Glass as an annual event linking Drysdale with a major cultural/social event – similar to, for example, Portarlington’s Mussel Festival and Queenscliff’s Music Festival. In particular, the DCSCA committee hopes that the Festival will offer a new and unique showcase to local glass artists, craftspeople and companies; encourage others to establish themselves in the area; and encourage local glass companies, artists and craftspeople to collaborate.
