Burning interest in “Twilight Flames”!

Interest in “Twilight Flames” – part of the 2017 Festival of Glass – is heating up, with tickets selling faster than for the equivalent event last year.

“Twilight Flames” will be a chance to meet master glass artist Davide Penso, to watch as he blows and sculpts glass and to listen to his stories about growing up and working in Murano, Italy.

Davide's prowess as a world class glass artist has brought him invitations to teach, demonstrate and lecture in Russia, the USA and throughput Europe. As well as “Twilight Flames”, Davide will be running workshops for beginning and experienced glass artists and it's a measure of his reputation among his peers that they are almost fully booked a month beforehand!

Murano and glass
Glass workers in Murano have created glass art since the 14th century and for centuries, Murano was the main producer of glass in Europe. Indeed, the island’s glassmakers held a monopoly on all forms of high-quality glassmaking - from small, exquisite paperweights to massive, magnificent chandeliers.

They lost their monopoly at the end of the 16th century, as a few Murano glass makers divulged the secrets of their trade to the highest bidders across Europe. By the 18th century, Murano’s glass industry was in serious decline, but it recovered in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; and today, glassmakers continue Murano’s centuries old traditions in what is still the island's main industry.
